Esther England
Professor of Voice
Ms. England graduated from The University of Montana-Missoula with a B.A. in Music with high honors in 1966. Following graduation, she rejected a solo contract with the Metropolitan Opera National Touring Company in order to accept a Fulbright Scholarship to the Musikhochschule München, where she also attended the Goethe Institut for advanced language training. After the Fulbright year, she remained in Germany for a total of three more years, where she was the mezzo soloist for the Bayerischen Rundfunkchor, and sang solo roles in opera and oratorio in Germany and France.
In 1969, she returned to the UM music faculty and began her long career as voice teacher, performer, Opera Workshop Director, and Musical Director. She founded and for 13 years directed the Western Montana Community Opera Workshop, and has served as Musical Director for both the UM Department of Drama/Dance and Missoula Children's Theatre musical productions. A number of her voice students over the years have gone on to major careers in musical theatre and opera, both in the United States and in Europe. Professor England is much in demand as a performer, adjudicator, and clinician throughout the northwest region and in the spring of 1998 was given The University of Montana Distinguished Teaching Award.
