Josh Mietz

Joshua Mietz serves as a graduate teaching assistant at The University of Montana—Missoula while pursuing the Masters of Music degree in Clarinet Performance.  He enjoys a diverse career as a clarinetist performing with both the Missoula Symphony Orchestra as the principal bass/E-flat and the Missoula Children’s Theater as the assistant principal clarinetist.  He also performs in numerous chamber ensembles throughout Montana and Colorado and maintains a small private studio.  Recent honors include election to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, an Honorable Mention Award at the 2006 UM Concerto/Aria Competition, and recent publication in The Clarinet (Sept 2007). 

Before studying at The University of Montana, Mietz served as the assistant principal clarinetist with the Denver Pops Orchestra under the baton of Zina Richardson while also serving as the director of orchestras in the Mapleton School District in Thornton, CO.   Prior to this appointment, he served as the director of bands in the Sanford School District, in Sanford, CO.

Mietz received his Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance in 2001 from the University of Colorado—Boulder and studied with Daniel Silver; Bil Jackson, of the Colorado Symphony; Dr. Phillip Aaholm; and Allan McMurray (conducting).  

When not engaged in music, Mietz enjoys fly-fishing and long distance running, placing third at the 2007 Missoula Marathon.
