Fall 2009 University of Montana Symphony Orchestra Audition Music
Where: Dr. Millán’s office (Music Building 113)
When: August 27-31, 2009 -
You may sign up for a time beginning on August 24. The sign up sheet will be posted outside Dr. Millán’s door.
What: The audition will include:

- Bass - Page 1 of 2
- Bass - Page 2 of 2
- Viola - Page 1 of 2
- Viola - Page 2 of 2
- Cello - Page 1 of 2
- Cello - Page 2 of 2
- Solo work(s) of your choice (2-4 minutes, without accompanist)
- Sight-reading
- Scale
How: Suggestions for a successful audition:
- Be prepared.
- Warm up before the audition.
- Listen to a recording of the excerpts to learn tempo, style, and how your part fits in.
- Clean and accurate playing is always preferred over uncontrolled fast playing
- The audition is a performance; if something goes wrong, just keep playing
- Take a moment to look at the sight-reading before starting.
Percussionists: Auditions for orchestra and wind ensemble will be combined. If you have any questions, please feel free to write to Dr. Millán at: luis.millan@umontana.edu.
Wind, brass, and percussion instrument excerpts are the same for both Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.
Wind, and brass instrumentalists need to sign up for times on Dr. Millan’s and Professor Smart’s door to be considered for both.
Percussion auditions for SWE and SO will be combined.
Fall 2009 Symphonic Wind Ensemble Audition Music
When: F2009 Audition Dates: August 29, 30, 31
Where: Professor Smart’s office (Music 13). Sign up for times outside door starting 7/15.
Audition Material:
- Audition Excerpts (below)
- Solo work(s) of your choice (2-3 minutes, no accompanist)
- Sight-reading
- Scales – major, minor
Excerpts:
- Please be prepared to play all of the enclosed music unless arrows or brackets tell you otherwise. Rhythmic accuracy is a must. Short multi-measure rests should be counted out.
- Make sure you look carefully for doublings on another instrument (flute/picc, oboe/eng.hn, sop. sx/alto sx, etc).
- Find resource recordings through the Mansfield Library website or online for Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger and “Profanation” from The Jeremiah Symphony by Leonard Bernstein.
