Concert Band Festival


Twenty-Sixth Annual University of Montana Concert Band Festival
Monday and Tuesday, February 25 and 26, 2008

Guest Soloist:

The guest soloist for this year is Peter Cooper, the principal oboist for the Colorado Symphony and instructor of oboe at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mr. Cooper will be offering a clinic session both days of the festival.

Clinicians:

Clinicians this year are Dr. Donald Peterson and Mr. Greg Bimm.  Don Peterson is the Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music Education at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, where he conducts the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band.  He also teaches courses in conducting, instrumental practicum, and music education.  Greg Bimm is the Director of Bands at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, IL, where he has taught for 30 years. His responsibilities include conducting and coordinating all aspects of the band program, including their award-winning symphonic band.  His bands are widely acknowledged as some of the finest high school bands in the entire country. 

We are very excited to have these gifted music educators to share their expertise with you and your band.  In addition to these two clinicians, University of Montana music faculty members Professor Leon Slater (brass/percussion) and Professor Maggie Schuberg (woodwinds) will offer written comments regarding each performance.  In short, our goal is to provide a valuable music education experience for you and your students within the context of a non-competitive yet stimulating format.

Schedule:

As in the past, every participating band will be scheduled a 30-minute time block (no more than twenty minutes of music) for their performance on the stage of the University Theatre.  This is followed immediately by a private 20-25 minute session in the University band room with one of our guest clinicians.

The UM Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform on both Monday and Tuesday, and our guest soloist will offer a clinic session each of the two days.

Application & Other Info:

Bands will be accepted on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, however all applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2008.  Verification of acceptance and further information will be forthcoming to all who respond.
