Music Competitions
The University of Montana Vocal Arts Competition
This years competition was held on March 7th, 2009 in the Music Recital Hall.
Winners in the Undergraduate Division were:
First Place, $500 award - Mercedes McCann, Soprano, with Linda Stratton, Accompanist
Second Place, $300 award - Joselyn Thomsen, Mezzo-Soprano, with Linda Stratton, Accompanist
Third Place, $200 award - Myra Nurre, Soprano, with Linda Stratton, Accompanist
Winners in the Graduate Division were:
First Place, $500 award - Brittany Ann Winberg, Soprano, with Linda Stratton, Accompanist
Second Place, $300 award - Amalia Morales, Soprano, with Linda Stratton, Accompanist
Third Place, $200 award - Luke Schellhardt, Tenor, with Lizzie Webb, Accompanist
This annual scholarship competition is open only to UM students currently studying voice with UM Voice Faculty. It awards students who are able to demonstrate exceptional talent in different styles of vocal music: opera, art song, and musical theater. Winners in each division receive prize money in the form of UM scholarships.
Students compete in either the undergraduate or graduate divisions.
- Repertoire Requirements:
Four memorized pieces:
2 operatic arias
1 art song
1 musical theater song
At least 2 songs/arias must be in a language other than English.
- Contestants must provide their own piano accompanist.
The competition is moderated by a panel of judges, who also provide each contestant with feedback after the competition.
