The University of Montana Concerto/Aria Competition

The 2008 Concerto/Aria Competition was held on December 5th, at 5:00 p.m.
This annual competition is open only to students currently enrolled for applied music instruction at The University of Montana. Winners of this competition will be featured in performance with the UM Orchestra.
2008-2009 Concerto Aria Competition Application
Eligibility:
All students must be registered for applied music instruction at The University of Montana. There is no age limit. Past winners are not eligible to compete. Exceptions will be made for those winners who wish to compete on a different instrument.
Guidelines:
Instrumentalists:
A movement or movements for solo instrument (s) and orchestra or wind/brass ensemble, not to exceed twenty (20) minutes in duration, for final performance.
Vocalists:
Minimum of two arias of contrasting styles from opera or oratorio, OR a movement or movements from a song cycle, with orchestral or wind ensemble accompaniment, not to exceed twenty (20) minutes in duration, for final performance.
*Note:
Student will need the ensemble director signature acknowledging approval of selected repertoire. Please consult ensemble director before extensive preparation.
MUSIC MUST BE MEMORIZED AND PERFORMED WITH PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT (OR APPROPRIATE ENSEMBLE) FOR THE COMPETITION! Students must supply their own accompanist. Contestants will be limited to 12 minutes of actual performance time during the competition. A winner or winners* will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by the Performance Committee. The judge’s decision, to be announced at the conclusion of the competition, is final. The information above may be subject to slight changes each year, by the Performance Committee.
