Areas of Study
Keyboard
Students with an interest in keyboard instruction and performance can draw upon a comprehensive program of study designed to meet a wide variety of vocational and avocational goals. Music majors and minors, as well as non-majors when faculty schedules allow, may enroll for private instruction in traditional and jazz piano, organ, harpsichord, and carillon. A well-rounded curriculum includes piano literature, piano pedagogy, advanced functional piano, keyboard harmony, accompanying classes, piano ensemble, as well as a complete series of organ courses from literature, pedagogy and service playing to organ construction and design. Regular opportunities for performance include weekly studio class meetings and student afternoon recitals. The Department of Music boasts two beautiful pianos in the recital hall: a Yamaha CFIII Concert Grand Piano with Disklavier technology, and a newly rebuilt Steinway D Concert grand. In addition, there is a Steinway D located in the University Theatre adjacent to the music building. The music building also contains an organ in the recital hall, two organ practice rooms, and period instruments including a fortepiano, a harpsichord and a virginal. Piano students earn access to the grand and upright pianos in practice and classroom facilities, as well as the Korg piano laboratory and Yamaha Disklavier upright pianos. The Department of Music frequently attracts illustrious keyboard guest artists and clinicians to the campus for residencies and visits. These nationally recognized performers often present master classes for students and appear in solo recital and as concerto soloists with such ensembles as the University Symphony Orchestra and Missoula Symphony Orchestra.
