Composition
The art of music composition has long played a major role in the musical scene at The University of Montana. As Montana's flagship institution of higher learning, the U of M offers young composers both undergraduate and graduate degrees, the only such degrees available in the state.
The Department of Music, faculty and students alike, support the serious young composer with first-rate premiere performances of their compositions for vocal and instrumental soloists, small ensembles, and major works for choir, orchestra and band.
Keeping up with the changing tides and opportunities for composers in the technological world, our composition degrees include coursework designed to enhance the creative process and supply the composer with a working knowledge of computers as both writing tools and performance instruments.
Along with a full range of courses in music theory and music history, composers at the U of M are equally well prepared as performers, receiving excellent studio instruction in their applied area.
